Eden Prairie Minnesota is a “second ring” suburb 10 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The city, which covers 36 square miles, experienced tremendous population growth during the late 1970’s and 1980’s. In the mid-70's, the community earned a higher profile with the addition of Interstate 494 and the Eden Prairie Shopping Center. Eden Prairie still uses its 1968 city plan seeking a balance of parks, businesses, homes and shopping centers. Today, Eden Prairie is home to more than 2,200 businesses, nearly 19,000 households and about 60,000 residents.
Eden Prairie was formed on May 11, 1858. Author Elizabeth Fry Ellet proclaimed it as the garden spot of the area. It is located in the southwest corner of Hennepin County, Minnesota in a setting of rolling hills and picturesque lakes and creeks.
The city has two regional parks, Bryant Lake in the northeast and Hyland-Bush-Anderson on the city border with Bloomington, Minnesota as well as 27 parks and a recreation system of its own. There are more than 40 miles of hiking and biking trails and 60 to 65 more miles planned for expansion. The city also has two golf courses; Edenvale and Bearpath CC a private Jack Nicklaus designed course.
Hennepin Technical College and Northwest Technical Institute are located in the city. Elementary and secondary students are served by Eden Prairie School District 272, and Minnetonka 276. Schools include four elementary, one intermediate, one junior high and one senior high and one private institution. Flying Cloud, a regional airport, is located along Hwy 212 in the southern part of the city.
The employment base will parallel with population size and reach 60,000 at full development. Jobs in the city include commercial/retail service, manufacturing and trade industries. Because of its strategic location and the availability of land, hundreds of new companies have moved into Eden Prairie in the last 10 years. Large companies like SuperValu, American Family Insurance, GE Capital, Eaton Corp, ADC and Lifetouch and The Minnesota Vikings to name a few companies. Many high-tech companies that produce and assemble computer components also have located in Eden Prairie. According to the 1990 Census, the City has a total labor force of about 30,000. The top three occupations of the City’s work force are executive in nature.
