The city of Minnetonka is a suburban community located eight miles west of Minneapolis in Hennepin County. The city has a land area of 28 square miles, and its 2000 population of 51,301 makes it the thirteenth largest city in Minnesota. Minnetonka enjoys an excellent location, with convenient access to the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area via interstate highways I-494 and I-394. Interstate Highway 394 runs from Minnetonka east to Minneapolis, and is a primary commuter route to downtown Minneapolis. Its reversible high-occupancy vehicle lanes create a priority route for buses and car-pool vehicles during peak traffic hours. The city is just 25 minutes from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport
HISTORY
When the colonists on the Atlantic coast declared their independence from Great Britain, Minnetonka was still a part of the Spanish territory that in 1803 was included in the Louisiana Purchase.
Dakota and Ojibway Indians first settled in the area. They believed the land around Lake Minnetonka ("minne" -- water, "tonka" -- big) was the legendary home of an extinct race. The first recorded exploration of the area by European settlers was in 1822, when a group from newly constructed Fort Snelling made its way up Minnehaha Creek (then known as Brown's Creek or Falls Creek) to the lake.
Between 1883 and 1956 the area within the original 36 square mile township grew smaller as Wayzata, Hopkins, Deephaven, Woodland and St. Louis Park incorporated or annexed portions of Minnetonka. In 1956 the remaining 28 square miles were incorporated as Minnetonka Village. In 1969, Minnetonka became a city by charter.
SCHOOLS
Minnetonka residents are served by three school districts: Hopkins #270, Minnetonka #276, and Wayzata #284.
There are also three private schools: Accell Academy, Immaculate Heart of Mary (Catholic), Minnetonka Christian Academy.
There are many beautiful parks and beaches located on or near the shores of Lake Minnetonka.
The beaches are immaculately groomed. Some have lifeguards and indoor facilities, while others tend toward the "rustic" side.
Area parks vary from vast, pristine reserves teaming with wildlife, to jogging and biking paths which meander through woods, prairie, neighborhoods and lakeshore. There are also many picnic grounds and fishing areas.
Included in the Parks & Beaches listings are gardens and privately owned camp grounds which are open to the public.
LAKE MINNETONKA HISTORY
From the days when Dakota Indians inhabited her shores, leaving behind ancient burial mounds which are still visible today, to the era of the steam locomotive and the paddle wheeler when grand Victorian hotels and amusement parks stood proudly on her banks, there has always been something alluring about this enchanted body of water.
Babe Ruth was a regular visitor, as was Clayton Moore (better known as the "Lone Ranger"). Thurlow Lieurance made the lake famous with his song, "By the waters of Minnetonka." The Lake Minnetonka area is also the birthplace of Tonka Toys and Minnetonka Moccasins.
A few moments spent in the LMO history section will shed some light on the history of a unique area once dubbed "Big Waters" by the native Americans
Each of the towns nestled on the shores of Lake Minnetonka has it's own unique history. Deephaven, Excelsior, Minnetonka, Mound, Navarre, Orono, Spring Park, Tonka Bay, and Wayzata.
